Open Canoes have long been used as a method of transport and a means of hunting and fishing around the world, particularly so in the high arctic and North America. Traditionally made from dugout logs, birchbark-on-frame, or skin-on-frame but are now manufactured from roto-moulded plastics or high-tech composite materials. These are versatile craft that can be used for recreational fun, touring and exploring and multi-day camping adventures. A note on terminology: In British English, the term "canoe" is sometimes used to refer to a kayak as well, while an open canoe is often called a "Canadian canoe" to distinguish open canoes from kayaks when the latter are termed canoes. This is why many kayaking clubs are actually called Canoe Clubs here in the UK. To make things even more confusing, there are now Pack Boats that are a hybrid between a canoe and a kayak! The most widely accepted naming practice is as follows:

• Canoe = open-top craft propelled with a single-bladed paddle
• Kayak = closed deck craft propelled with a double-bladed paddle
• Pack Boat = open-top craft propelled with a double-bladed paddle
