These kayaks are powered using your feet, leaving your hands free and offering a number of advantages over paddling. Pedal kayaks are great for kayak fishing and photography. There are two main types of pedal drive system used in pedal kayaks: Propeller Drives and Fin Drives.
Propeller Drive Kayaks are operated by cycling the pedals on the drive, similar to cycling a bike. This turns the prop beneath the kayak propelling the kayak forwards. This system has the benefit of having instance reverse by simply cycling backwards.
Fin Drive Kayaks are operated by stepping back and forth on the pedals in a reciprocating manner. This drives flexible fins side to side beneath the kayak, propelling the kayak forwards with incredibly efficiency. Similar to how a penguin uses its wings to swim through the water. Some fin-drives such as the Hobie Mirage Drive 180 have a reverse mode by pulling a toggle on the drive system, but most are forwards only drives.
